Our Jade Lights

Our Jade Lights

After lending to the North Pole my jade lights,

I offer my mint tones to compose an etheral sight,

In sequoia forests whence arises a petrichor scent at night.

But there she is, in her scarlet petal dress,

Standing, alone, in MY garden cress,

And all you can notice is her brightness.

She always attracts your attention,

When she projects her fire with pretention

On my irridiant forests which are now vermilion.

Why do you, Humans, prefer her, Red ;

Despite my resplendent lime and olive shades

Coloring the grass around watersheds?

I’m leaving, hearing the mellifluous sound

Of mambas, boomerangs slithering to the ground,

Closing my emerald eyes, to reach the eternal bound.

Eva Rivière 1OIB1 (finalist in the ASIBA poetry competition senior category)

Our Green Dream

Our Green Dream

The tinkling of a cow,

The sizzling of a hummingbird,

The mouthwatering smell of your grandma’s pie on the window

The perfect blue sky clean of carbon dioxide

The vast garden smelling of flowers and vegetables,

The rooster singing in the distance ready to start the day

Until the sun rising

When the tinkling turns into car horns

Where sizzling comes from the air conditioning trying to cool the sweat

Bathed in the smell of the homeless man’s far too many beers on the sidewalk

Looking up to a the sea of billboards and bricks

Opening the shutters to a maze of concrete

Hearing in the distance the voice

Of what could have been our green dream walking away from us.

Yona Benyamin, 1OIB1 (Third prize in the ASIBA poetry competition, senior category)

Far Away

Far Away

Far away from the busy cities and the darkened skies,

Out of reach of the oppressive society and a certain demise,

Lies a promising land of natural splendours,

Separated and secluded from restless endeavours.

Through a complex web of highways

That unwinds to a toll free of charge on Sundays,

And opens up on a one-way rural road,

Unveiling a tranquil path seldom followed.

Down the green valleys, across the green lake,

You’ll see the Green village in its traditional state,

Across the green chapel with its moss-covered steeple,

Stands the village square and all of its people.

There is a special place, where kisses can last,

A green-eyed couple lie on a carpet of grass,

Swapping saliver and kisses by the green oak tree,

A sad teen, watches with green eyes, enviously.

On the cliff tops overlooking the green sea,

Sits the ivy green tombstome of Old Mary,

Beautiful and wise she was, held in high esteem,

I believe she herself was fond of the colour green.

Ilymun 2020

ILYMUN (Lyon) conference : Thursday, 30th January – Saturday, 1st February 2020

Fourteen Lycée Duby OIB students made up our delegation to ILYMUN 2020. This was the 8th edition of ILYMUN – the annual debating conference held at the Hôtel de Région –  jointly organised by the Cité Scolaire Internationale (CSI) and the International School of Lyon. The theme of the weekend was « Water : A Thirst for Change. » In 2015, the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals and set targets for 2030. ILYMUN focused on Goal 6, ‘clean water and sanitation’ and Goal 14, ‘life below water.’

IMG_7699 2There were 11 committees and delegations present from France, Israel, Khazakstan and the United Kingdom, 28 schools in total.

A feature of each ILYMUN is the list of excellent guest speakers, experts in their fields, each of whom addresses a committee, takes questions, presents a crisis scenario for the delegates to debate solutions and then returns to review the conclusions of each committee. This year, delegates heard from, among others, Doctor Jean Louis Etienne, renowned doctor, scientist and polar explorer who was the first French person to reach the North Pole. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr Etienne stated, « Any odyssey starts with boldness ; we must persevere and explore to become the perpetrators of tomorrow’s world. » Dr Etienne also gave a presentation on ‘Arctic Waters’ to the Territorialcommittee.

Guest speaker, Mr Zisis Kozlakidis, a microbiologist specialising in virology who currently works for the International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organisation (WHO), addressed the WHO committeeand spoke about the Capetown drought of 2017/18 when the city of 5 million people was just 90 days away from ‘Zero Water Day.’ Fortunately, a lot of rain fell in the week before the deadline day!

Mr Peter Barabas,  the Editor-in-Chief at Euronews, talked to the Historical Security Councilabout the Cyprus crisis of August 1974 when Turkey invaded the island and Mr Benedikt Kraus, a security expert at Boehringer Ingelheim (pharmaceutical products), addressed the Security Council on the subject of ‘Organised crime at sea.’ Mr Kraus’ crisis situation was located in the Gulf of Guinea where there were 30 incidents of piracy reported in the final month of 2019.

IMG_7697The Duby delegation had students in all of the above committees (for the complete list please see below).

Mr Rob Miller, the Head of the Anglophone Section at CSI, closed the conference with these moving words : «Think of the little steps that you can take on a daily basis : turn off the tap, turn off the light, turn off the screen BUT keep your smile ON ! It’s what we share, the warmth of humanity that is important … and can save us. »

Finally, a big ‘thank you’ to Mme LAGET who prepared the necessary documentation and also accompanied our delegation to Lyon; also to the parents who kindly drove us to the Aix TGV station on Thursday morning andto our students who acquitted themselves very well during the conference and with their host familiies. They persevered and they explored!

CUIMun 2019

Participation in Cambridge University Model United Nations : Friday, 8th – Sunday, 10th November 2019

logo cuimunOrganised by AGESSIA and accompanied by Mme Byrnes and David Lewis, a Section Anglophone delegation of 12 Terminale students attended the XXV edition of the Cambridge University MUN (CUIMUN) which was attended by one other high school from India and by many UK university students (including delegates from the London School of Economics, King’s College London and the University of Kent).

Our students did the Lycée Duby OIB Section proud with their regular contributions to committee debates, based on sound knowledge of the issues being discussed, gathered in advance of the conference – preparation always being the key. At the awards ceremony, held in the famous Cambridge Union debating chamber, our delegation picked up a commendation and two honorable mentions.

1

The theme of the conference was ‘Progress in an uncertain world’ and CUIMUN 2019 opened with a speech by Lord Jay of Ewelme, GCMG ( holder of the Grand Cross of the order of St. Michael and St. George). The former British ambassador to France and current cross-bench member of the House of Lords, presented « the state of the world today – in 15 minutes ! » The guest speaker posed many challenging questions : «  Extinction Rebellion is pricking our consciences but will real action follow ? » ; « what are the implications for war in the age of drones ? » and « how do you govern countries in the internet age ?» Lord Jay advised the assembled delegates to «take nothing for granted. Multilateral organisations need to be protected and strengthened ; the United Nations – and especially its peace-keeping forces – has never been more important.»

The committee rooms were held in numerous Cambridge University colleges and these included Jesus, Corpus Christi and St. John’s. The stunning architecture and the fine interiors of the college rooms all contributed to a great atmosphere. Our students acquitted themselves admirably and were not daunted by the level of debating required in the committees they sat on ; a list of these and our delegates follows. Well done everyone !

Global Health Cluster : Emilie DELFORGE (who represented UNICEF was also our delegation’s Head Delegate).

Historical Crisis Committee : Nadia GOLOTCHOGLOU rôle-played as Maria I of Portugal and was attached to the British cabinet ; period studied was the Napoleonic Wars).

Council of the European Union : Gabriel FRASER represented Austria.

UK-EU Negotiations Committee : Alexander PONZO represented Denmark as member of ‘the accession bloc’.

Historical Security Council : the Iranian Hostage Crisis of 1979 : Achille GAZAILLE represented Bolivia.
